1954 NY Journal American
Jackie Robinson

This issue featuring Dodgers Hall-of-Fame icon Jackie Robinson is one of 59 unnumbered cards within the 1954 NY Journal American set. Produced by Hearst Consolidated Publishing, these cards were newsstand giveaways to purchasers of the New York Journal American newspaper. All cards featured players from the Giants, Yankees or Dodgers. This was a one-year only issue.

In addition to breaking baseball's racial "color barrier" in 1947, Jackie Robinson enjoyed an outstanding 10-year major league career (1947-1956). A lifetime .311 hitter, he was a six-time All Star selection, a Rookie of the Year award winner, the NL MVP Award winner in 1949, and a member of the beloved 1955 Brooklyn Dodgers World Series championship team.

This example is very well-centered, with just the slightest hint of a shift. The corner quality is premium for the grade, with only a touch of friction visible at a couple of the tips. The edges are smooth and free from any micro-tears or notches. The original surfaces have just a modest degree of natural age-toning. And the black and red printing impression is about typical for the issue. This is one of just five copies graded NM-MT 8 by PSA, with two finer.
